They’re estimated at roughly 12,000 years old, with some evidence pushing them toward 20-24 kya, making them older than the Indus Valley civilisation and a rare Indian example of open-air geoglyphs. What they look like - Over 1,500 carvings at ∼70 sites, concentrated in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts (Barsu, Devache Gothane, Ukshi, Kasheli, etc.) and Goa’s Pansaymol. - Life-sized or larger outlines of animals (elephants, tigers, rhinos, hippos, sharks, peacocks), human figures, and abstract geometric motifs, made by pecking/scooping 3-5 cm deep into rock. 【1j1O】 - The absence of domestic animals suggests hunter-gatherer creators from the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition. Why they matter - They fill a huge gap in Konkan’s prehistory, providing the only evidence of human occupation between the Paleolithic and early historic periods. - The fauna depicted includes species long extinct locally, offering ecological clues. - India has placed them on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list and Maharashtra declared key sites protected monuments in 2024. They’re vulnerable to laterite mining and development (e.g., the proposed Barsu refinery), so conservation efforts are underway with local communities and research centres. If you ever visit Ratnagiri, the Barsu and Ukshi sites are among the most accessible clusters.
